As part of its environmental and social commitments, Horus Pharma has announced the renewal of its partnership with Plastic Bank in 2026. Plastic Bank is a Canadian social enterprise that fights both ocean plastic pollution and poverty among vulnerable communities.

Initiated in December 2022, this collaboration is part of Horus Pharma’s broader sustainable development strategy and its global Eco’Ophtalmo program, dedicated to reducing its environmental footprint and promoting sustainable ophthalmology.

A long-term partnership

Through the renewal of its partnership with Plastic Bank in 2026, Horus Pharma reaffirms its commitment to reconciling therapeutic excellence, environmental responsibility, and positive social impact.

Regulatory and health requirements in the pharmaceutical industry lead to a preference for plastic packaging for ophthalmic treatments, as it helps ensure product sterility, safety of use, and precise administration of eye solutions. Aware of the environmental impact associated with these materials, the Group is nevertheless taking concrete action to reduce its footprint as part of its overall Eco’Ophtalmo program.

Thus, the company, which has chosen production that is 75% based in France and 100% in Europe, promotes multi-dose formats for its eye drops, which use less plastic than single-dose units, and incorporates bio-based plastic into two of its major product lines.

In addition to reduction efforts at the source, Horus Pharma is committed to plastic neutrality through its partnership with Plastic Bank. The laboratory offsets the plastic volumes from around thirty product references placed on the market by financing the collection and recycling of an equivalent amount of plastic waste in regions most exposed to pollution. This approach not only prevents plastic from entering the environment, particularly marine ecosystems but also supports local communities through a high-impact social model.

A measurable and impactful partnership since 2022

Since the partnership was launched in December 2022, the initiative has enabled the collection and recycling of nearly 450 tons of plastic waste. An initial phase covering 2022 and 2023 led to the collection of 100 tons of plastic along the coastlines of Southeast Asia, areas particularly affected by plastic pollution.

Between 2024 and 2025, the initiative continued in Egypt, reflecting Horus Pharma’s strong connection to the Mediterranean, with more than 300 additional tons collected, preventing the likelihood of leaking into the Mediterranean basin and preserving its ecosystems.

In 2026, Horus Pharma plans to collect and recycle an additional 88 tons, bringing the total to 500 tons of plastic waste collected since the beginning of the partnership.

The recovered materials are transformed into Social Plastic®, a traceable recycled raw material that can be reintroduced into industrial production chains, thereby reducing dependence on virgin plastic.

Beyond its environmental impact, the partnership with Plastic Bank is built on an organizational model centered on the value of Social Plastic® and the involvement of local collectors who gather plastic waste. The collected materials are then recycled and reintegrated into the circular economy. These collectors benefit from stable income, social benefits, and improved access to services that help enhance their living conditions. By promoting an inclusive circular economy, this initiative combines environmental protection with tangible support for local communities.

2026: strengthened commitment for sustainable impact

By renewing its partnership with Plastic Bank for 2026, Horus Pharma confirms its intention to pursue a long-term strategy based on clear, transparent, and measurable objectives. Through its Eco’Ophtalmo program, the Group reiterates its ambition to combine economic performance, ophthalmic innovation, and environmental and social responsibility.

“By renewing our collaboration with Plastic Bank in 2026, Horus Pharma confirms its long-term commitment to a sustainable healthcare model that combines medical performance, environmental responsibility, and positive social impact. Initiated in 2022, this partnership is part of our global Eco’Ophtalmo program, which structures all our actions aimed at reducing the environmental footprint of our activities, from the eco-design of our products to the responsible management of plastic waste.”- Nicolas Claret, deputy general manager of Horus Pharma

“Since 2022, Horus Pharma has taken meaningful action for people and the planet with #Us. The long-term commitment of its leadership in creating impact reflects what’s possible when businesses restore the planet and uplift collector communities. Together, we are proving that companies can be a powerful force in helping end poverty and stopping plastic pollution.” – David Katz, Founder and CEO of Plastic Bank

Founded in 2003, Horus Pharma is an independent laboratory and a major player in the French and European markets, recognized for its expertise in developing preservative-free ophthalmic products.

Plastic Bank is a Canadian social enterprise collecting and recycling plastic waste in vulnerable coastal areas across Southeast Asia, Latin America, and Africa in quantities equivalent to those sold in Western countries.
