The department of pharmaceuticals, government of India, has launched a call for proposals under the Promotion of Research and Innovation in Pharma-MedTech Sector (PRIP) scheme.
This initiative aims to strengthen the sector and make it more competitive globally. The scheme has a budget of ₹5,000 crore and plans to support around 300 projects, leading to a total investment of about ₹11,000 crore in new medicines, complex generics, biosimilars, and innovative medical devices.
The department has updated the guidelines to enhance the scheme’s impact and better meet the needs of all stakeholders.
For early-stage projects, MSMEs and startups can apply for funding up to ₹5 crore for projects costing up to ₹9 crore. For later-stage projects, MSMEs, startups, and industries can apply for funding up to ₹100 crore for projects costing up to ₹285 crore. Early-stage projects can receive 100% funding for costs up to ₹1 crore and 50% for additional costs, while later-stage projects can get 35% of the project cost.
The scheme also focuses on areas that are important for public health but may have lower market potential, known as Strategic Priority Innovation (SPI) areas. For later-stage projects in these areas, funding can go up to 50% of the project cost. SPI areas include rare diseases, antimicrobial resistance, vaccine-preventable diseases, tropical diseases, and pathogens that can cause outbreaks or pandemics.
Additionally, the scheme encourages collaboration between industry, MSMEs, startups, and respected academic institutions. It gives preference for funding to those who partner with these institutions for up to nine projects at both early and later stages. This collaboration aims to leverage academic research to develop viable technologies and products for the market. The scheme also allows assisted applicants to use funding for creating public research assets in these institutions.
Besides providing financial support, the PRIP scheme will establish strong support systems for innovation. Seven National Institutes of Pharmaceutical Education and Research (NIPERs) will create dedicated Centers of Excellence to act as research hubs. An Academia-Industry Coordination Committee will be formed to strengthen industry-institute relationships. There are also plans to create a national digital innovation exchange to connect innovators with investors and government initiatives, ensuring innovators receive support throughout their research and development process.
The application window opened on October 1, 2025, through a digital portal for easy application submission. Detailed guidelines and eligibility criteria are available on the PRIP portal. By encouraging both domestic and global participation, the scheme aims to boost investment in research and development.
This approach will help deliver affordable, high-quality healthcare solutions, improve public health, and position India as a central hub for healthcare innovation. Overall, this scheme aims to create a healthier and more secure future for India and enhance its role in global health.
