Muscle recovery is an essential part of any fitness routine. Exercise can put increased stress on skeletal muscle fibers, causing soreness and fatigue. If the body does not properly repair and rebuild its muscles after exercising, it can negatively affect training and performance.
Nestlé announced that their scientists have developed Muscle Repair+, a new bioactive nutritional supplement to accelerate muscle repair and regeneration after exercise. This innovation is designed to support physically active adults and athletes seeking support for muscle recovery. It utilizes a novel combination of the vitamin B-related nutrients nicotinamide and pyridoxine, which enhances muscle cell repair and muscle stem cell activity, and also supports cellular recovery after exercise.
Nestlé scientists published this bioactive blend of nutrients in the Journal of Clinical Investigation in collaboration with the Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique – Institut NeuroMyoGène in Lyon and other external partners.
Dr. Jérôme Feige, senior expert in musculo-skeletal health at Nestlé Research, said, “Skeletal muscles rely on local stem cells for repair and regeneration after exercise or injury. We screened over 50 000 natural molecules and identified that nicotinamide and pyridoxine can work together to activate these cells and help muscles regenerate faster and recover more strength.”
Based on this work, the nicotinamide and pyridoxine bioactive blend was tested clinically for muscle regeneration after intense exercise in collaboration with the University of Copenhagen. Clinical trial results were presented at the International Biochemistry of Exercise Conference, the EMBO muscle biology conference and the Society for Muscle Biology conference.
These scientific findings were translated into the launch of Muscle Repair+ in the United States under the Pure Encapsulations brand from Nestlé Health Science. The innovation builds on Nestlé’s efforts to explore science-based nutritional solutions to support muscle health, including age-related muscle loss and physical fatigue.
Eugenia Oton, head of research and development for Nestlé Health Science, said, “Consumers increasingly understand the essential role that good nutrition plays in any muscle recovery strategy. This bioactive supplement underscores our commitment to developing nutritional solutions for specific health needs that are backed by verifiable science.”
