Leonhard Kurz has announced its success at the Gold Leaf Awards 2024, organized by the Foil & Specialty Effects Association, FSEA. Kurz won the Gold award in the ‘Best Use of Printing/Embellishment on 3D Objects’ category for its ‘Luxury Cosmetic Hand Cream’ tube, produced on the DM-Uniliner 3D. This packaging highlights how 3D digital embellishment transforms products with brilliant metallic decoration, sharp edges, and tactile reliefs.

Innovative 3D Effects

The award-winning ‘Luxury Cosmetic Hand Cream’ packaging features intricate metallic decorations with a premium gold finish, adding a touch of elegance. Utilizing advanced 3D effects, the design boasts a raised, embossed appearance on its floral and leaf motifs, enhancing both visual and tactile appeal.

Key elements are highlighted with UV spot varnish, providing a glossy, eye-catching finish that stands out against the matte background. The packaging also includes textured patterns that offer a satisfying tactile feedback, further elevating the user experience. Complementing these effects are colorful and intricately detailed floral and leaf designs, making the packaging vibrant and captivating.

All of these effects are achieved by UV spot varnishing and digital metallization in an efficient single pass operation. This sample sports Kurz digitlal metal transfer product DT-S Luxor 220 for brilliant digital metallization, which is system-matched to Kurz Digital Embellishment equipment.

“The inkjet on substrate technology gives a 3D look. It combines both metallization and spot UV coating in a single pass. Early adopters who have invested in this technology are finding that brands have designed their packaging around this 3D technology. They have done this in different versions and are starting to see really good results. That’s why they come back to Kurz and say: we want to take this to industrial scale,” emphasizes Michael Aumann, global director of Digital Embellishment Solutions at Kurz.

The DM-Uniliner 3D, developed by Kurz and its subsidiary Steinenmann DPE, showcases their extensive subject matter expertise and technology leadership in engineering of digital embellishment equipment. This industrial web-fed machine excels in applying UV spot varnishing and digital metallization in a single step, achieving impressive output quality through 600 dpi native resolution.

The FSEA, Foil & Specialty Effects Association, was founded in 1992 with the aim of raising awareness of the industry and promoting its growth. It covers decoration technologies such as foil stamping, embossing, cold foil technologies, specialty coatings, laminates and laser cutting. In 2024, there were a total of 34 different categories to which companies could apply with their outstanding samples.
