Tele-MANAS mental health app expanded

The government has expanded the Tele-MANAS mobile application to include 10 more regional languages, significantly enhancing accessibility to mental health services across the country. The move aims to make tele-mental health support more inclusive and user-friendly for diverse linguistic communities.

The announcement was made by Union minister of state for health and family welfare, Prataprao Jadhav, in a written reply in the Lok Sabha.Launched on World Mental Health Day, 10 October 2024, the Tele-MANAS Mobile Application is a comprehensive digital platform providing support for mental health concerns ranging from general well-being to complex mental disorders.

With this latest expansion, the app is now available in 12 languages—English, Hindi, Assamese, Bengali, Gujarati, Kannada, Malayalam, Marathi, Tamil, Telugu, Odia, and Punjabi.

The application also includes accessibility features for visually challenged individuals, offering a specially designed interface and a toll-free phone line that enables access without screen use.

As of 27 November 2025, Tele-MANAS is operational in 36 states and union territories, with 53 Tele-MANAS cells functioning across the country. Services are currently offered in 20 languages, depending on the regional preferences of the states and UTs. Since its inception, the Tele-MANAS helpline has received over 29.82 lakh calls, including 12.33 lakh calls handled during the current year alone.

To further strengthen mental health service delivery, the government has also launched a video consultation facility under the Tele-MANAS platform, supplementing the existing audio helpline service.

Additionally, a dedicated Tele-MANAS Cell has been set up at the Armed Forces Medical College (AFMC), Pune, to provide specialized tele-mental health support to Armed Forces personnel and their dependents.

Officials noted that these developments are part of the broader National Tele Mental Health Programme, launched on 10 October  2022, to ensure wider access to quality mental health counselling and care nationwide.
