PresVu, said to be India’s first eye drop for people suffering from presbyopia, is set to hit the market in October this year. The drop is claimed to reduce the need for reading glasses, media reports said. The medicine from Entod Pharmaceuticals has received the nod from the Subject Expert Committee of the Central Drugs Standard Control Organization (CDSCO) and the Drugs Controller General of India.
Presbyopia is an age-related condition that makes it difficult to focus on near objects. Generally, people above 40 years of age suffer from this condition. PresVu is for people over 40 who seek to reduce their reliance on reading glasses.
According to a report, 1.09 billion to 1.80 billion people globally are estimated to be suffering from presbyopia, highlighting the massive impact of this condition.
The medicine is made using ‘pilocarpine’, which has been used in the treatment of glaucoma for the last 75 years. It reduces the size of the pupils which helps to see objects up close. A single drop starts working in just 15 minutes and its effects remain for the next six hours. If the second drop is also poured within three to six hours of the first drop, the effect will stay even longer, up to nine hours, media reports said.
HealthTekPak could not independently verify the claims.
Nikhil K Masurkar, CEO, Entod Pharmaceuticals, told the media, “PresVu has been created through years of research and development. Its approval by DCGI is a major step in our mission to transform eye care in India.”
