
Eighteen Indian companies are among the 228 winners of the prestigious World Star Global Packaging Awards 2023 awarded by the World Packaging Organization (WPO) at Interpack 2023, held in Dusseldorf from 4-10 May 2023 – showcasing the country’s packaging prowess on the global map.

There were 488 entries in various categories from 41 countries. Each year, WPO recognizes the best in packaging innovations from across the globe. Its objective in organizing the awards is to increase awareness of the importance of packaging in having a better life and to recognize the innovation and efforts of brand owners, designers, students, and branding agencies for creating packaging solutions of the future and also responding to new challenges and global trends such as sustainability and hygiene.
Leading India’s flag at the event, ITC’s packaging and printing business won five top prizes — four in the beverages category and one in food. The packaging designs from ITC focused on sustainability and innovation.“We created a coffee packaging innovation involving an ultra-high barrier recyclable packaging solution, a compostable, environment-friendly tea envelope bag with a 100% biodegradable sealant coating patented by ITC and an eco-friendly, leak and spill-proof paperboard-based pack for an ice-cream maker,” Rajesh Voruganti, general manager, ITC packaging and printing business, said.

ITC showcased premium and sustainable packaging solutions for Black Dog gold reserve and Oaken Gold Whiskey, respectively. “The win is a testament to our commitment to the purpose-led innovation that has made ITC a future-tech enterprise. The sustainable packaging solutions recognized at the WorldStar Awards are a reflection of our dedication to environmental health, as we journey ahead in the mission to build a climate-positive enterprise,” Voruganti said.
Zydus Lifesciences followed with two awards in the medical and pharmaceutical category. The award was conferred on the sustainable packaging of Renocrit injection and Nucoxia injection for its innovative inclusion of an ampoule tray with an in-built ampoule cutter.
Huhtamaki India Procter and Gamble, and Hindustan Unilever earned accolades in the health and personal care category. Hindustan Unilever’s push-and-break inner plug for the Indulekha hair oil pack characterized by counter threads, an elongated horizontally placed distributor tube, an inner cylindrical stopper, and an outer cylindrical stopper is an innovative solution to avoid the leakage of the oil after application and creates a channel for the flow back of the residua oil to the container.

The unique combination of inhalers for blocked nose and roll-on for headache relief into one garnered Procter and Gamble the award in the health category. The objective to eliminate the usage of conventional PET-based wrappers and go plastic-free with paper-based soap wrappers secured victory for Huhtamaki India.
Along with ITC, Kellogg’s India and Tata Consumer Products bagged an award each in the food category. Kellogg’s India has transitioned from bag-in-box to a doy-pack packaging method for its food products. The doy-pack has minimized the pack weight by 80%, saves material costs by 50-60%, and reduces 1.5% of packaging waste.

Other notable companies that have secured the position in their respective categories include Colgate-Palmolive for recyclable tubes for toothpaste; Bizongo Desworks for ultratech crackfiller; Pidilite Industries for consumer packaging of 1 and 5 liters Dr. Fixit pack; Bajaj Electrical for transport package for 45 kgs stadium lights; Dharampal Satyapal for Ksheer Ratn Ghee- ceramic pack and Craft packaging for Selg seal box.
